Coaching and mentoring support

What is coaching?

Coaching often begins with asking the question: How do I manage….

Coaching is the development of skills and understanding through focused work on specific issues. The coach will want to understand the issues facing the client, the culture within which they are working and the way in which they work before identifying with the client the areas requiring attention. Specific tools and techniques will then be worked on collaboratively. Development and improvement might be gained through repeating and rehearsing certain activities which can take place in a coaching relationship.

Why might you want to access coaching?

Entering into a coaching relationship offers you an objective space to receive feedback in areas such as communication, interpersonal relationships, change management, leadership and personal and professional development. It offers you access to an independent person with whom to share frustrations as well as successes, and time to reflect upon your practise and learning.

Why might an organisation want to access coaching for its employees?

Coaching provides one way for employers to encourage employees to develop to their full potential.

Appropriate coaching can:

  • encourage staff retention;
  • improve productivity;
  • improve team dynamics;
  • enhance professional development;
  • encourage creativity and new networks both within and external to the organisation;
  • over time, create a culture, which continuously promotes individual employee growth and development.
Supporting mentors

The role of mentor, as part of a manager’s job, is often functional, supporting people to do specific tasks to a specific standard for a specific role. It often starts with developing learning objectives where development and support needs are identified. The manager may then suggest various methods of meeting the needs, as well as providing some specific training and feedback.We provide an external service, training and supporting workplace mentors, helping them to expand their range of mentoring skills and techniques.
